Linked vs. Standalone Notes

Notes in Helium can exist on their own or be linked to an Assignment, Event, or Resource. Understanding the difference helps you stay organized and find them later.

Linked Notes

A linked note is attached to an Assignment, Event, or Resource. These are auto-created for you anytime you use the smaller “Notes” area when editing one of these items. To specifically create one with a link:

  1. Open an Assignment, Event, or Resource
  2. Scroll down to the Notes section
  3. Click “Open in Notebook”

Linked notes display a badge showing what they’re connected to, making it easy to see the relationship at a glance.

Standalone Notes

A standalone note isn’t attached to anything — you can think of these more as general documents, from taking broader notes, jotting down your thoughts, or drafting a paper or project. Create one by opening the Notebook and clicking the ”+” button.

Why Can’t I See My Notes?

The Notebook has filters that may hide some notes. If you’re missing a note:

  • Check your type filters: Click the filter icon and make sure the relevant type (Assignments, Events, Resources, or Standalone) is selected.
  • Check “Hide notes linked to hidden groups”: If this option is enabled in the filter menu, notes linked to course groups that are hidden from your calendar won’t appear.
  • Search by title: Use the search bar to find notes by title or by the name of the linked item.

If you have “Remember filter state” enabled in Settings, your filters persist between sessions — so a filter you set last week might still be active.

You can link or unlink a note directly from the note editor. Open any note in the Notebook and look for the badge in the title row:

  • Linked note: Click the × on the badge to unlink it. The note becomes standalone — your content is preserved, and the change is saved the next time you save.
  • Standalone note: Click the Standalone badge to open the link picker. Select the type (Assignment, Event, or Resource), search for the item, and click it to link the note.
